The first time I paid for postage, it cost more than I earned on the product. I had sold a jar for 1,200 dinars, proud as a peacock, and then the post office handed me the bill: 890 dinars for a package that was half a kilo heavier than I thought. My margin died in a cardboard box. If you make physical products, shipping will be your biggest shock. Not taxes, not marketing, just a plain box and the cost of sending it. Here is how to shape it so it works for you, not against you.
Why Shipping Hurts More Than You Expect
When you start out, sending a package feels like a small thing. Put the product in a box, tape it, done. Then reality kicks in: boxes cost money, bubble wrap costs money, tape costs money, and postage is calculated by kilogram and dimension, not by your good will.
Three costs catch you off guard. The first is packaging: box, filler, and tape come to 100 to 300 dinars per package. The second is the hidden extras: return shipments, insurance, cash on delivery fees that take their percentage. The third is time. Every package you carry to the post office yourself is half an hour of your day, and that shows up on no invoice.
There is one more trap few people mention: carriers charge by what they call dimensional weight. If you ship something light but bulky, you pay as if it were heavy. So measure and weigh the real package first, then set your shipping price. Doing it the other way around is how I lost those 890 dinars.
Shopify Shipping Zones, Explained Simply
Think of zones as circles on a map. Each circle has its own shipping price. The closest circle is the cheapest, the farthest is the most expensive. That is the whole philosophy.
In the Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Shipping and delivery, and create your zones there. For a start, this is all you need:
- Domestic zone: your own country. The lowest price, the fastest delivery, and this is where most of your customers live.
- Neighboring zone: neighboring countries or your region. A slightly higher price, but still reasonable.
- The rest of the world: only if you truly want to ship there. If you do not, simply do not create that zone and customers from those places will not be able to buy. That is a legitimate decision, not a failure.
For each zone you choose how the price is calculated: flat (every order pays the same), by weight (lighter packages cost less), or by cart value (bigger carts pay less or nothing). My advice for the first month: a flat price for the domestic zone and done. Get fancy only when real orders show you the numbers are off.
Free Shipping, Without Losing Money
Customers hate paying for shipping more than they hate an expensive product. That is not logic, it is psychology: a shipping fee feels like a penalty, while a product price feels like value. That is why the words 'free shipping' sell, but only if you built the cost in beforehand.
The math is simple. Take your average shipping cost, say 500 dinars, and put it into the product price. A 2,000 product becomes 2,500 with 'free shipping'. The customer is happy, your margin untouched.
The even better variant is a threshold. 'Free shipping over 4,000 dinars' pushes the customer to add one more item to the cart to cross the line. Set the threshold 15 to 20 percent above your average cart and watch the average order grow. It is the cheapest marketing trick that exists, and it costs you zero.
'Where Is My Package?' Solve It Once and for All
The moment you ship a package, the customer enters a zone of silence: they paid, and they see nothing. That silence creates panic, and panic creates emails. The solution is letting the customer see where the package is, at any moment, without you.
Shopify already sends the tracking number in the shipping confirmation email, just put it in a visible spot in that email, as the main button. For more serious tracking, two apps do the job:
- AfterShip: builds a tracking page with your logo, supports a pile of carriers, and automatically notifies the customer when the package moves, stalls, or arrives.
- Track123: a similar thing, very simple to set up, with a clean tracking page and automatic notifications.
With one of these, 'where is my package' questions drop to a minimum, and you get hours back every week. If you want the whole support system from start to finish, we have a dedicated guide for that.
Stop looking at postage as a cost you suffer and turn it into part of the offer. Measure your packages, set your zones, build shipping into the price, and let an app answer the questions. The first package you ship without a knot in your stomach is the first sign the store is growing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many shipping zones do I need at the start?
Usually two: domestic and one wider zone if you realistically have customers there. Offering fewer territories with accurate prices beats offering the whole world on a guess.
Flat rate or weight-based pricing?
Flat rate at the beginning, because it is the simplest and customers understand it. Switch to weight or cart value only when orders show the flat price loses money on heavy packages.
How do I know what free shipping threshold to set?
Check your average cart value in the Shopify reports and set the threshold 15 to 20 percent above it. That way most customers have to add at least one more item for shipping to be free.
